After the Vietnam War, over 2 million Vietnamese escaped to search for freedom. Hundreds of thousands died before they even reached land. Forty years later, "VIETNAMERICA" follows martial arts master Hoa Tien Nguyen’s return to Southeast Asia to search for the graves of his wife and two children. Having escaped on a boat with 75 of his family and friends, Hoa is the lone survivor. Throughout his return, Hoa and a diverse group of Vietnamese survivors as well as historical scholars explore the reasons for the Vietnamese diaspora. 

Today, Vietnamese Americans are the largest political refugee group in the United States.

Sau khi chiến tranh Việt Nam, hơn 2 triệu người Việt Nam thoát để tìm kiếm tự do. Hàng trăm ngàn người đã chết trước khi họ thậm chí đạt đất. Bốn mươi năm sau, "VIETNAMERICA" sau trở lại võ thuật bậc thầy Hòa Nguyễn Tiến đến Đông Nam Á để tìm kiếm các ngôi mộ của vợ và hai con. 

Sau khi trốn thoát trên một chiếc thuyền với 75 của gia đình và bạn bè của mình, Hòa là người sống sót duy nhất. Trong suốt sự trở lại của mình, Hòa và một nhóm đa dạng của những người sống sót Việt Nam cũng như các học giả lịch sử khám phá những lý do cho cộng đồng người Việt.

Hôm nay, người Mỹ gốc Việt là nhóm người tị nạn chính trị lớn nhất tại Hoa Kỳ.
